Rank algorithm update from google weeded out a lot of good or bad websites, in the hope of furnishing it’s search users better results, on official google blog it is estimated 11.8% search results will be affected by this update, in another word, there are about 12% of google search results are considered low quality by google itself. The update was initiated more than a year ago, no wonder I saw a few of my keywords’ ranks dropped like a rock, but almost all the ranks promoted by articles and blog posts were not affected, a few of these keywords ranked better than ever, it’s safe to say that old way of link building is doomed.
Now what on earth is plain link building and how do people do it? a lot of marketing companies did and are doing the plain link building, they will get links from any websites which accept adding links, the only updates on those websites are the new links, it’s safe to assume all of them are trash, we call these sites link spamming sites. The latest google update will definitely downgrade most if not all of these sites, the links on those spamming sites won’t work anymore.
A few real world examples will help to explain what I said. When I got into online marketing long time ago, I started with this keyword, Tie Down, at that time almost every body was doing plain linking campaign, a lot of sites I used had too many links, worst yet, those sites had no content at all. I would give credit where credit is due, this linking strategy worked, eventually the keyword could be found on first page, the party was over when google updated it’s algorithm. Now let’s look at another keyword, chain pullers, we put the link in relevant context, not too many plain links have been built, now we have really good ranking for this keyword. So contextual link wins this time, what about future? It all boils down to content, so if you create great content, not only people will love to read your stuff, so do the search engines. You may think there are already too many blogs out there, it’s not true, there will never be too many good blogs, for instance let’s examine this one, baby strollers , I build it as a hobby and kept adding good or mediocre content, and to my surprise, I have high ranks for some of competitive keywords. As far as SEO concerned, quality article marketing is much better than plain link building. At the end of day all you need to do is to create attractive content, share the content with people, in the mean time advertise your business with your content, this strategy will prevail in short or long term. Whatever you do, you will need persistence and patience, you shouldn’t expect things to improve overnight, i.e., selling online or improve your search rankings, keep doing what we have to do till the end of world.
